93 H Wheel is a man beater built out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that isolates the H-back on a wheel route out of the backfield or slot alignment to attack overplayed linebackers and safeties. The route combo typically pairs the wheel with an underneath crosser or flat route to hold zone defenders while the wheel stretches the sideline vertically, creating a natural pick or leverage advantage against man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the wheel route against any single high safety or blitzing linebacker, then works down to the shorter crossing route or check down if the wheel is taken away by a deep half defender rotating over.
Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender aligning over the H-back pre-snap, since man coverage responsibility on that defender is the biggest tell that the wheel route will win vertically. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, as these leave the deep sideline vulnerable once the underneath defender loses contain on the wheel. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebacker assigned to the H-back, if he opens his hips late or gets picked off by the crosser, the wheel is wide open down the sideline. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties can shut this down since the outside corner or safety can sink and undercut the wheel route before it stretches vertically. Beware of a user-controlled safety lurking underneath or spying the H-back release, since a heads up defender can jump the wheel route early and bait an interception if the QB forces the throw.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on receivers and a single high safety, since the wheel route thrives when a linebacker or slower safety has to run vertically with the H-back.
Use motion or a shift before the snap to see if the defense follows the H-back, confirming man coverage and setting up the wheel for an easy win against a linebacker.
Hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag if you see zone drops sinking too deep, giving you a quick throw option before the wheel fully develops.
This play pairs well with Y Cross or Curl Flats in your call sheet since both threaten similar zone drop areas, forcing the defense to guess between shallow crossers and the deep wheel.
Best used on second or third and medium situations where the defense is likely to play man coverage to prevent the checkdown, since the wheel route punishes man principles far more than it beats disciplined zone shells.
