Primary read progression starts with the corner route to the flat side, works to the deep dig or post crosser in the middle third, and checks down to the underneath outlet if both windows are covered by a two high shell.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high tells you the corner route has a one on one matchup outside while two high means the dig route sits behind the underneath zone. Watch cornerback press alignment, tight press man invites the double move corner route to win over the top, off man coverage means you should look to the dig or post crosser working across the field. Key linebacker depth and drop angles post snap, shallow linebacker drops leave the intermediate window open for the dig route while deep drops shut down that read and force you to the checkdown. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the passing lanes over the middle, a rover or spy sitting in the throwing lane can jump the dig route so have your eyes ready to move to the corner or flat outlet. This play struggles against a hard cover 2 or cover 4 shell with disciplined deep quarters coverage since both verticals get squeezed, and it is vulnerable to well timed zone blitzes that disguise the middle read presnap.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the dig route sitting at the second level becomes your primary target since it settles into the soft spot of the zone. Against man coverage look immediately to the corner route breaking outside, it creates natural separation off the double move and beats press corners who bite on the initial stem. Use motion or a quick glance to identify blitz packages, if the defense shows a nano blitz look off the slot alignment, get the ball out on your first read or check to a hot route slide protection to buy time. This play works best on second and long or third and medium since it takes a full route tree to develop, pair it in a sequence with Quick Slants or Bubble Slants to keep the defense honest against the shallow stuff before hitting them with the double move shot play. Combine with HB Option or Read Option out of the same personnel to freeze linebackers and open up the middle read on 617 later in the drive.
