RNS Streak out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel is a four vertical concept designed to stretch the field and attack deep coverage voids. The diagram shows two outside receivers running straight streaks up the numbers, a slot receiver breaking into a corner route from the inside, and a tight end or slot running a shorter angle route that bends upfield to occupy underneath zones. This is a pure man beater that also punishes single high safety shells, with the primary read progression starting at the deep outside streak to the field, then working to the inside corner route, and checking down to the short angle route if the safety rotates over the top.

Defensive Reads

Watch the free safety depth at the snap, if he stays in the middle of the field this play struggles against a true Cover 1 or Cover 3 shell unless the corner route occupies him. Key the flat defender and outside linebacker, if they sink deep with the corner route the underneath angle route will be wide open for a check down. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness of this defense against RNS Streak, since the outside streaks will separate against trail technique. If the defense shows Cover 2, the streaks running into the deep quarters between safeties become tough throws, so bait the safety with eyes on the corner route before working back outside. Look for disguised blitzes off the edge since the streaks take extra time to develop downfield, forcing a quick check to the short angle route as a blitz beater.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone or bring a single high safety look.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two deep safeties, because that shell forces you to read the field streak against a corner playing outside leverage rather than forcing a throw into the post safety.

If the corner routes are covered by a nickel defender shaded inside, hot route the short angle route into a quick out to beat aggressive man coverage and get an easy completion.

Pair this play with RNS Curl Flat or RNS Hook in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the vertical shell shot and the quick underneath answers off similar formation looks.

Snap the ball quickly against blitz-heavy defenses since the streaks take time to develop, and consider motioning the slot receiver pre-snap to diagnose man versus zone before the snap.
