Read Option out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel is a zone read run play with the QB reading the crashing edge defender on the play side. The offensive line steps into a zone blocking scheme moving right while the HB and QB mesh in the backfield, giving the QB a give or keep decision based on the defensive end's crash angle. This is a pure run play with no route concept attached, designed to punish overaggressive edge defenders and gap-shooting fronts.
Watch the play side defensive end or OLB pre-snap, if he is aligned wide and crashes hard on every snap this play is built to exploit his aggression with the keep read. Look for light boxes with only six or seven defenders in the run fit, since Read Option needs a numbers advantage on the play side to consistently gain yards. Identify if the defense is in a two high shell with soft linebackers, that indicates the second level will be slow to fill and the QB keep lane should stay open. Post-snap, track the backside pursuit linebacker, a fast flowing backer who does not respect the mesh point can chase down the QB keep before it develops. This play struggles against a spy or a scrape exchange technique where the DE stays disciplined and a linebacker replaces him on the QB, so recognize that exchange quickly and consider bailing to a called pass instead.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you want a base run play that keeps the defense honest against your spread passing attack.
Check the defensive end or edge rusher's alignment before the snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on every snap this play is designed to make him pay by pulling the ball.
Use the QB run commit or ball carrier vision stick to manually control the mesh point read if the CPU AI is making poor decisions on give versus keep.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek in the same set to keep linebackers frozen, since the mesh point action looks identical and forces defenders to respect both the run and the quick throw.
Avoid calling this against disciplined defenses that stay home on the edge, since a patient DE who sits and reads the QB will blow up both options.
