Breakdown

Read Option is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel, with four receivers stretching the field horizontally to hold defenders in space and remove extra bodies from the box. The QB and HB are aligned in the classic zone read mesh, with the QB reading the play side end or edge defender to decide between handing the ball off or pulling it and attacking the edge himself. There is no pass concept tagged to any of the four wideouts on this look, so the entire design lives and dies on the mesh point decision and the offensive line's zone blocking scheme up front.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive end or outside linebacker assigned to contain, if he sits and reads instead of crashing hard he is likely being coached to force the QB keep into a spy or extra defender. Count the box pre-snap, six or fewer defenders in the box means the zone blocking scheme has a clean angle advantage for the offensive line. Look for a user controlled defender lurking at the mesh point trying to bait a pull, disciplined user play here will shut down the QB keeper option entirely. Check safety depth and rotation, if a safety rotates down late it usually signals run support on the play side and the QB should favor the hand off away from that rotation. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge on the read side are the biggest threat to this concept, since a fast unblocked defender collapses the mesh point before the QB can properly read it.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have a numbers advantage before snapping it, since Read Option only wins when defenses are light in the box. Key the play side defensive end during the mesh point, if he crashes down on the HB pull it and get to the edge, if he stays home hand it off and trust your zone blocking. This play pairs well with HB Counter and Inside Zone out of the same personnel since all three punish teams that load the box with linebackers or crash defensive ends. Save it for run and pass balanced downs like first and ten or second and short so defenses cannot sit on the pass and vacate the box for run support. Against aggressive defenses that bring safeties down into the box pre-snap, check into RPO Read Slot Slide or RPO Zone Peek from the same set to make them pay for cheating up.
