Breakdown

Slot Fades is a four man route concept out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel that stacks streaks on the outside with hitches from the inside receivers, while both the HB and full offensive line stay in to pass block for max protection. This is a man beater at its core, designed to isolate the outside cornerbacks on go routes while giving the quarterback a quick hitch outlet underneath against off coverage or blitz looks. With six blockers accounted for, it also holds up well against pressure, giving the quarterback time to work the field on deep shots.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify press corners with no safety help over the top, that alignment tells you Slot Fades is live and the streaks should win. Watch for two deep safeties rotating down to man coverage after the snap, since that leaves your outside corners isolated with no deep help. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with safeties staying deep, the streaks will be capped and you need to rely on the hitches underneath instead. Key the flat and curl zone defenders, since a hard blitz or Cover 0 look with no underneath help makes the hitches an easy completion before the pass rush arrives. Beware of user controlled safeties sitting in the deep middle, since a smart user can rob the streaks even when the shell shows man coverage.

Usage Tips

Check the safety shells before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate to a single deep half post snap that is your green light to trust the streaks on an island against man coverage.

Against press man, use the streaks immediately since your receivers get a free release without a chip, and against off man the hitches become the quicker answer to move the sticks.

With max protect from the HB and full line, you can hold the ball longer than usual, so do not panic and check down early, let the deep routes develop against man coverage.

Use this play on third and long or in two minute situations where you need an explosive gain, since the hitches alone will not consistently move the chains against soft zone.

Pair this with Y Stick or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to get defenders sitting on short routes, then dial up Slot Fades to hit the streaks over the top once the defense bites on quicker concepts.
