Slot Fades lines up two receivers to each side, with the outside receiver running a vertical fade toward the sideline and the inside slot receiver releasing on a quick out toward the flat before the outside man clears. This is a true one-on-one man beater, designed to isolate cornerbacks on the perimeter with a jump ball throw to the boundary. The primary read progression is outside in: check the fade for a favorable matchup or back-shoulder window first, then work down to the slot flat route underneath if the corner is playing tight or the safety rotates over the top.
Defensive Reads
Watch the cornerback depth and technique pre-snap: press alignment with no deep safety help signals a fade window, while soft corners bail immediately into a deep third. Identify two-high safety shells such as Cover 2 or Cover 4, since a safety rotating to the fade side can jump the route and turn it into a pick six. Key the flat defender or slot corner on the underneath out route, as a linebacker or nickel corner sitting in a hard zone drop will erase that quick throw. Look for Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a single high safety cheating to one side, which leaves the opposite fade in a true one-on-one that favors the offense. Man press with an underneath robber or lurking linebacker can jump the slot out route if the quarterback telegraphs the check down too early.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the cornerbacks are in press man with no safety help over the top, since that is the ideal look for the fade throw.
Use this play in the red zone or near the sideline on the boundary where the fade route has a defined landmark and the corner has less room to recover.
If you see a two-high safety shell, look to check down quickly to the slot out route in the flat rather than forcing the fade into a safety.
Pair Slot Fades with Y Stick or Quick Slants earlier in a series so defenses respect the quick game and start playing softer coverage, opening up the fade on a later snap.
Lead the throw to the fade with touch and place it on the upfield shoulder away from the defender, especially against corners who are playing trail technique.
