Smash Y Post pairs a classic smash concept to one side (corner route from outside WR with a flat/hitch underneath) alongside a Y post from the tight end working the middle of the field, giving you a true high low read on one side and a coverage stretcher up the seam on the other. This is a man and zone beater built around the Y post as the primary read, since it exploits any single high safety or linebacker trying to carry a tight end vertically. Protection is standard Shotgun 10 personnel pass pro, so this is a straight drop back concept rather than an RPO or play action shot.
Identify the free safety alignment pre snap: a single high safety lined up over the middle is the green light to hit the Y post before he can rotate over. Watch the flat defender on the smash side, if he sinks with the corner route instead of squatting on the flat, that confirms man coverage and opens throwing lanes underneath. Track the middle linebacker or nickel depth at the snap, a shallow drop means he is trying to jump the post route, so be ready to layer the throw or check to the smash side. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting on the post is the shell that shuts this down hardest, since that defender only has to defend one route in his zone. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can rush the quarterback before the post fully develops, so recognize pressure looks and be ready to get the ball out to the underneath flat route as a checkdown against the blitz.
Read the safety shell before the snap: if you see a single high safety, prioritize the Y post immediately because that safety cannot cover the corner route and the post at the same time. Against two high shells, work the smash side first since the flat/corner combo will beat Cover 2 and Cover 4 without needing to test the post into a safety still in the deep half. Use the Y post as your man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 3 with linebackers matched on the tight end, since the vertical speed to the post window usually wins before the linebacker can flip his hips. Sequence this play with Smash Corners or Smash Digs earlier in a drive so defenders start jumping the flat and corner routes, opening the Y post window even wider on this call. Best used on second and medium to third and long where you have time to let the post develop and the smash side occupy underneath defenders.
