Four Verticals out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel sends all four receivers vertical, with both outside receivers running straight seams up the sideline and both slot receivers pushing inside seams up the middle of the field, while the running back stays in to check release and leak up the middle as a fifth option on a delayed route. This is a classic zone beater designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep safeties with four vertical stems, forcing a numbers disadvantage no matter which two or three defenders drop deep. The primary read progression starts with the seam route on the side of the single high or deep half safety leverage, then works to the opposite seam, and finally checks down to the running back's middle release if the safeties rob both inside verticals.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and width since two safeties splitting the field wide open signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, while a single safety sitting in the middle of the field signals Cover 1 or Cover 3. Post-snap, watch the flat defenders and cornerbacks: if they sink deep with the outside verticals in Cover 2, the underneath area opens up but the seams get contested by the safeties. Key the middle linebacker's drop against Cover 3 teams since a shallow drop from the Mike can rob the inside seam and force a hitch in your progression. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by inside seam releases, so look for press corners turning their hips late as a sign you can win the vertical stem immediately. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone, since a smart user player will bait the inside seam throw and jump the route, making the outside verticals the safer read against aggressive human defenders.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or one deep safety before the snap to determine which seam will be open. Against Cover 2, target the seam route on the side where the safety cheats toward the slot receiver's stem since he cannot cover both the seam and the flat. Against Cover 3, throw off the flat foot of the cornerback and attack the seam behind him before the deep third safety can rotate over. Use hot routes to convert one outside vertical into a comeback or sit route if you see press man coverage, giving yourself a quick-hitting option against aggressive corners. Pair this play with RNS Streak or PA Read in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between straight verticals and play-action verticals out of similar formations, and mix in Slants Middle or Quick Slants on early downs to set up defenders biting on shorter routes before hitting them with verticals on second and long or third and long.
