PA H Cross runs out of Shotgun Spread with a play-action fake to sell run before the quarterback works the crossing concept. Defensive Reads

Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since that player can jump the crossing route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Check safety depth before the snap, if the safeties are shaded to one side or playing single high, the crosser can run into a soft spot in zone coverage. Beware of a Cover 2 shell with linebackers dropping into hook zones quickly, since that can clog the middle read and force the quarterback to check down to the shallow drag or flat route.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and medium to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers before they can drop into their crosser zone. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the deep cross has room to work underneath them for a big chunk gain. Hot route the flat receiver into a quicker out if you see man coverage with no underneath help, since the shallow drag can be jumped by a spying linebacker. Pair this with HB Draw or Inside Zone in your play sequence so the defense respects the run look and commits to the box, making the play-action element more effective on third down. If the defense shows blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the outside receivers into quick option routes to give the quarterback a faster outlet against pressure.
