RNS Y Stick out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel gives you a five route horizontal stretch built around the stick concept. The outside receiver to the top runs a vertical release up the sideline, the receiver just inside him breaks off a quick out at the sticks, and the Y off the bone releases into the flat off a shallow drag to the boundary. On the backside, the two receivers run a quick slant and a shorter angle route underneath, giving you a full field zone beater with built in man beater elements against off coverage. Primary read starts with the stick/flat combo to the play side (out then flat), then works back to the backside slant if the defense rolls a safety over the top or the flat defender squats.
Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the vertical route the stick window opens immediately for an easy completion. Key the underneath linebacker responsible for the stick zone, if he jumps the out route be ready to work the flat route behind him. Against Cover 3, the corner to the play side will often bail deep, leaving the stick and flat combo wide open in the intermediate area. Man coverage with a deep half safety can be a problem since the vertical release occupies the corner and forces a quicker decision on the stick, so expect tighter throwing windows. If the defense shows a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, avoid the drag route across the middle and stick to the boundary side stick and flat combo to stay away from a user controlled defender jumping the crosser.
Presnap, identify if the defense shows two high or single high safety look, this play thrives against zone shells like Cover 3 and Cover 2 because the stick and flat combo attacks the underneath seams.
Hot route the backside slant into a quick out if you see man coverage across the board to give yourself a rhythm throw against off man corners.
Use this on early downs and third and short to medium since the stick route sits down quickly and gives you a high percentage completion versus zone drops.
Pair this play in your call sheet with Four Verticals and PA Slot Slide from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the vertical shots, keeping linebackers honest against the flat route.
If you see a nano blitz or heavy pressure look, get the ball out fast to the flat or stick route since the concept is designed to win quickly before the pocket collapses.
