Breakdown

Shock H Option is a trips based pass concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that attacks the field with a five man route distribution and no threat of a run action shown here. The backside X runs a vertical up the numbers while the H out of the backfield releases into an option route working from the flat to the middle of the field, giving the QB a built in answer against both man and zone. On the trips side the outside receiver bends a corner route up the sideline, the middle slot pushes vertically then breaks back to the QB, and the inner slot runs a quick hook underneath. The design is a zone beater at its core because the option route and hook sit in soft spots against Cover 3 and Cover 4, but it also holds up against man coverage since the option route can settle or break away from a trailing linebacker. Progression starts with the H option route out of the backfield, then works to the inner slot hook, and finally to the deep shots on the outside if the coverage bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker assigned to the H option route, if he sits in a shallow zone drop the option route settles for an easy check down, if he chases in man coverage the option route breaks outside for separation. Key the flat defender or slot corner on the trips side, aggressive jumps on the underneath hook route open up the corner route behind him for a big gain. Look for a nano blitz or interior pressure package that could force a quick throw before the option route fully develops, this play is vulnerable if the QB has to get the ball out before the option breaks. This concept struggles against disciplined match zone coverages where defenders sink and read the QB's eyes, since the option route has less room to operate against a defense that plays it patiently rather than aggressively jumping routes.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the defense is showing two high or single high safety look, since the option route out of the backfield is your first key against either shell.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone, trust the H option to settle in the void between the underneath zone and the flat defender for an easy completion and positive yards after catch.

Against man coverage, let the H option break away from the defender's leverage, and be ready to hit the corner route on the trips side if a linebacker tries to carry the option man vertically.

Use this play on early downs or manageable third and medium situations where the option route can move the chains without needing to force the deep shots.
