Corner Strike is a trips-based pass concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with 11 personnel. The backside X on the left runs a deep go while the two remaining backside routes settle into a deep out and a corner-breaking route, giving that side a natural high-low read. To the trips side, the outside receiver runs a corner route (the red line) that stems vertically before breaking to the sideline, the slot runs an out breaking underneath it, and the inner receiver releases into a shallow flat route, creating a clear vertical stretch on the boundary defender. The primary read progression starts with the trips-side corner route as the first look against man coverage, then works down to the flat route as the underneath zone beater if the corner is capped.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and rotation, a two-high shell that stays split is vulnerable to the corner route sitting in the void between the corner and safety. Watch the cornerback's alignment on the trips side, if he is playing tight man with no help over the top the corner route wins immediately on the break. Post-snap, key the flat defender or nickel corner, if he sinks with the corner route instead of covering the underneath flat you have an easy checkdown throw. This play struggles versus press man with a deep safety showing over the top since the corner route has no room to work and the quarterback can get forced into a covered read. Look for user-controlled defenders jumping the underneath out route on the backside, a lurking linebacker or nickel sitting on that route can bait an interception if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or one-high safety shells since the corner route needs a soft corner or a blown coverage rotation to hit versus single-high looks.
Use this against man coverage on the trips side, the corner route creates natural leverage against a defender playing outside technique and wins on a well-timed throw before the safety can rotate over.
Hot route the shallow flat receiver into a quick option route if you diagnose a hard blitz look, giving the quarterback a fast outlet against pressure.
Pair this with Curls X Go or Comebacks from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and underneath timing throws off similar formation looks.
Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a explosive gain but still have a checkdown to the flat if the corner window is not there.
