Breakdown

Mtn Seam Swirl lines up out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with a trips side to the left and a single receiver isolated to the right. The lone receiver runs a deep seam that bends into a corner breaking route, the outside trips receiver clears vertically on a deep crossing route while the middle trips receiver swirls underneath and works back to the flat, and the inside slot runs a shallow drag under the formation while the running back checks release into a flat/swing route to the right. The primary read starts with the deep seam breaking route against the single receiver side, then works to the crossing route working across the middle of the field, and finally checks down to the swirl or drag underneath if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the single receiver side cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing tight man with no deep safety rotating over, the seam to corner route will win late against the sideline. Identify the deep safety shell before the snap, a two high look forces the quarterback to hold the ball longer while a single high safety opens up the seam breaking route immediately. Post-snap, key the flat and hook defenders on the trips side, if they widen with the crosser the swirl route underneath becomes the easy answer against zone coverage. This play struggles against disciplined zone drops that hold their depth, especially against a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell that keeps a deep defender over the seam route. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, he can jump the crossing route or the swirl route if the quarterback stares down either read too long.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to long when you need to attack the middle of the field with layered depth.

Pre-snap, look at the single receiver side alignment. If the corner is playing outside leverage with no safety help over the top, take the seam to corner route as your first read.

Against zone shells, key the flat defender on the trips side. If he sinks with the crosser, the swirl route sitting down underneath will be wide open for an easy completion.

Motion or shift the trips side pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap, this helps you diagnose blitz packages faster.

Pair this play with Four Verticals and PA Y-Out from the same Y Trips Wk set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and underneath swirl concepts out of an identical formation look.
