Y Corner H Option is run from Shotgun Y Trips Wk with three receivers bunched to the strong side and a single receiver isolated backside on a vertical route. The Y (TE) runs a corner route from the trips side while the two other trips receivers work an out and an option route underneath, and the backside single receiver runs a straight vertical to hold the safety. The primary read starts with the Y corner route attacking the deep outside quarter, then works down to the H option route running the option route as the underneath conversion. This is a man beater at its core, since the corner route exploits standard alignment while the option route gives a built in adjustment against man leverage.
Watch the cornerback aligned over the Y receiver pre-snap. If he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, the corner route wins immediately on the break. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the option route. If he sinks deep into a zone drop instead of mirroring the receiver, the option route sits down for an easy conversion throw. Read the safety rotation after the snap. A single high safety rotating hard to the trips side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which favors the corner route sitting in the deep outside third against a sinking cornerback. Two deep safeties staying split post-snap indicates Cover 2 or Cover 4, which puts real pressure on the corner route to squeeze between the cornerback and safety, so be ready to check down to the option route quickly. Watch for a user controlled linebacker or safety sitting in the shallow zone under the corner route, since a lurking defender there can jump the option route or undercut the corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long.
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner is playing outside leverage on the Y before the snap, since that determines if the corner route wins to the sideline or if you need to hitch the read down to the option route immediately.
Check the strong safety depth in the trips bunch. If he is sitting shallow in a zone shell, the corner route from Y will sit down in the honey hole between levels and become your first read instead of a progression read.
Hot route the backside single receiver into a deeper vertical or comeback against zone shells that show two deep safeties, since his route as drawn is mainly a clear out and does not create a natural throwing window on its own.
Use this play on second and medium or third and short to medium distances, since the option route underneath gives the quarterback a built in checkdown against blitz looks while the corner route stays alive as a shot play against man coverage.
Pair this call with Comebacks or Curls X Go from the same Y Trips Wk set to keep the defense honest, since both plays start with similar trips alignment but attack different levels, forcing linebackers and safeties to hesitate on their run fits and coverage drops.
