Breakdown

Dig X Comeback is a trips-based man beater out of Shotgun 11 personnel that pairs a deep dig from the middle receiver with an X receiver comeback breaking back to the sideline. The dig sits down over the middle of the field looking for soft spots in zone or separation against man, while the comeback attacks off man leverage or sits in the void underneath deep zone coverage. Primary read progression starts with the dig running through the trips side, then works to the X comeback if the dig is taken away by a linebacker or safety sinking underneath.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are deep and split (two high shell) the underneath area opens up for the dig route to work. Key the corner over the X receiver, tight man coverage with inside shade signals the comeback should win at the top of its route since the defender is playing to take away the inside dig. Identify any linebacker sitting in a hook or curl zone, a lurking linebacker can undercut the dig if he reads the quarterback's eyes early, so pump or manipulate with eye discipline. This play struggles against press man with safety help over the top (Cover 1 or Cover 3 press), since both routes need separation off the line and time to develop. Look for blitz packages sending extra rushers off the edge, since this concept relies on timing and a clean pocket, a fast four man rush or delayed blitz can disrupt the quarterback before the dig or comeback fully develop.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the corner over the X receiver, if he is playing off man or bailing into a deep third the comeback route has an easy pass window to attack.

Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense expects a quick underneath throw, the comeback route punishes cushion coverage and off corners.

If the defense shows a two high shell, prioritize the dig since the middle of the field should be softer with the safeties split wide.

Pair this play with Curls X Go or Fl Dig from the same set to keep the defense guessing between comeback breaks and vertical stems, this forces linebackers to widen their drops.

Hot route the trips receiver into a shallow drag if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, this gives you a built in checkdown against blitz looks.
