Mtn RPO Base Alert Smash is an RPO out of Y Trips Wk that gives the quarterback a run-pass conflict read tied to the second level defender. The passing concept shows a corner route breaking outside off the trips side that clears vertically, a quick out sitting underneath at the sticks, and a hitch or flat route on the backside isolated on the boundary defender, forming a classic smash combo. Post snap the quarterback reads the flowing linebacker or alert key to decide between handing off the inside run action or pulling and throwing the underneath out route, with the corner route serving as the alert shot if the defense sells run.
Key the flowing linebacker at the snap, if he steps up into the run fit the quick out behind him should be open for the pull and throw. Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a hard corner sitting on the out route, this can bait the quarterback into a low percentage throw so know when to check the run instead. Identify if the defense is running a nano blitz or sending extra rushers off the edge, since the RPO read window shrinks fast and the quarterback needs to get the ball out immediately. Look at the safety alignment before the snap, a two high shell favors the smash concept while a single high safety rotating down can jump the corner route and take away the shot play. Track the boundary cornerback leverage, if he is playing outside shade the hitch or flat route underneath becomes the higher value throw against off coverage.
Check the box count before the snap and if the defense is light in the box, prepare to throw instead of handing it off since the run fit will be favorable for the defense.
Use this against Cover 2 shells since the smash combo stresses the corner who has to choose between the flat out and the corner route over the top.
Hot route the backside hitch into a quick slant if you are getting man coverage matchups you like on the boundary, especially against nickel or dime personnel.
Pair this call with Mtn Smash Choice or Mtn PA Smash Scissors later in a series so the defense sees the same trips formation and has to respect both the RPO run threat and the play action smash shot.
Use in second and short or third and short situations where linebackers are more likely to bite on the run fake, opening up the underneath out route for an easy conversion.
