Breakdown

Levels Y Corner is a trips-side high low concept paired with a backside dig. Out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk, the backside X releases on a deep in breaking route while the inside trips receiver runs a corner route that stems vertically before breaking to the sideline, working a horizontal stretch with the underneath trips receiver running a flat route and the point man running a short out. The RB checks releases into the flat away from trips, giving the QB a two level read read on the trips side (corner over flat) with the backside dig as the alert against zone leverage that squeezes the trips concept. This is a classic Cover 2 beater built to attack the seam and flat defenders with a levels progression.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender on the trips side presnap, if he is sitting shallow with no immediate widen he is likely reading run or robbing the flat, which opens the corner route behind him. Watch the deep half safety alignment, if he is shaded toward trips presnap this play struggles and you should check to the backside dig or a different concept entirely. Post snap track the middle linebacker or nickel defender dropping into the seam, a good user lurk sitting in that throwing lane can jump the corner route and turn it into a pick six. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route sneaking behind press corners, so bail technique from the corner or off man leverage is a green light to throw it. Disguised zone blitzes that bring pressure off the edge while dropping a defensive lineman into the flat will confuse the levels reads, so keep an eye on presnap edge alignment and be ready to hot route protection or check the RB into a blocking assignment.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify the safety shell first, this play is built to torch Cover 2 by putting the corner route over the flat defender before the deep safety can rotate over.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or a sky safety rotation, work the backside dig immediately since the trips side gets bracketed and the corner window closes fast.

Use motion or a hot route on the RB to check him into a swing route if you see a blitz off the edge, this gives you a built in hot read against overload pressure.

Pair this play with Levels Y Out and Y Corner H Option in your play calling sequence, the route stems look identical presnap which forces defenders to guess and opens up the corner route once they start jumping the out breakers.

Best used on second and medium to second and long where defenders sit in zone drops and give the QB time to work the full levels progression from flat to corner to backside dig.
