Breakdown

Slot Fade is a trips-based dropback pass out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that isolates the backside X on a fade against single coverage while the trips side clears space underneath. The backside X runs a vertical fade up the boundary, the inside slot in the trips bunch runs a corner route, the middle trips receiver runs a short in and out check release, and the RB releases on a shallow drag across the middle. The primary read starts with the backside one on one fade, then works to the corner route breaking outside if the fade window is covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify press man or single high safety alignment on the backside corner before the snap, since that is the exact shell this fade route is designed to exploit. Watch the flat and curl defenders on the trips side, because if they widen with the corner route it opens a soft spot for the underneath drag from the RB. If the defense rotates to two deep safeties or shows quarters shell, the fade throw becomes low percentage and you should immediately look to the shorter routes in the progression. Key the slot corner blitz or nano pressure off the edge, since a quick pressure package can force the quarterback to speed up his fade read before it fully develops. Zone coverage with a deep half safety shaded to the boundary side is the main defensive answer, so recognizing that rotation post snap should send you away from the fade toward the drag or comeback options.

Usage Tips

Check the corner pre snap to see if he is playing off man or bailing into a deep half, since the backside fade only wins against single high man coverage or a corner playing tight technique.

If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the fade into a comeback or peek the corner route on the trips side instead of forcing the deep ball into a defender with help over the top.

Use this in fringe red zone or deep shot situations on second or third and long when you have a size mismatch on the backside X against a smaller corner.

Pair this call with Curls X Go or Y Corner H Option from the same set so the defense sees similar trips alignment but has to respect different vertical stems each time.

Motion or shift pre snap if your playbook allows it to confirm man coverage before snapping, since a defender following the shift into the fade release is a clean tell to trust the one on one throw.
