RPO Zone Peek out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk pairs an inside zone run with a quick peek route (bubble or flare) built into the read for the trips side, giving the quarterback a true run pass conflict on every snap. The RB reads the zone blocking while the QB reads the alley defender or slot corner: if that defender crashes down on the run fit, the peek throw to the flat is live, and if he stays home in coverage, the QB hands off or pulls it to the run. This is a run first RPO that punishes overaggressive linebackers and light boxes, with the primary progression being box count first, then peek defender key, then give or throw.
Identify the alley or slot defender before the snap since he is the key conflict player the entire concept is designed to attack. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the line on run action, the peek throw to the flat should be uncontested. Look for teams sitting a corner or safety flat footed over the trips slot in zone shells, since that defender taking away the peek forces the offense back into a straight run read. Beware nano blitzes or aggressive edge pressure off the trips side, since the QB needs time to read the peek defender and a fast overload blitz can force a rushed decision or blown assignment. Man coverage with the alley defender locked onto the peek receiver and no run support crashing is the best way to shut this down, since it removes both the easy throw and the numbers advantage in the box.
Check the box count before the snap and if the defense is in a 6 man box or lighter with the trips corner playing off, lean toward pulling the peek instead of the run.
Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay balanced and keep defenses honest against your Inside Zone and Same Side Zone calls from the same personnel.
If the defense shows heavy zone shells with a flat defender sitting on the peek route, trust the run fit and let the RB work the zone scheme.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you expect man coverage, since the peek concept alone will not beat tight man unless the alley defender bites hard.
Sequence this play alongside RPO Peek Slant and RPO Base Alert Lookie so linebackers cannot key run fit versus peek without also respecting a fast strike downfield, forcing hesitation that opens both the run lanes and the peek window.
