Quick Fork Zig is a trips-based quick game concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with 11 personnel. The backside X runs a deep zig across the field as the primary vertical answer, while the trips side stacks a pin route breaking outside, a corner breaking route underneath it, and a shallow drag from the inside slot crossing the field low, with the RB checking down into the middle void. This is a zone beater built to attack the middle of the field void and hi-lo the flat defender, with the zig as the big-play window if the deep half opens up and the underneath crossers as the quick outlet progression.
Pre-snap identify if the defense shows two high safeties, since that squeezes the zig route and forces the quarterback into the shorter trips-side combo. Watch the flat defender on the trips side, if he widens with the pin route the corner route sitting underneath opens up for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker depth, a shallow drop from him opens the shallow drag for a big gain after the catch. User-controlled defenders sitting in a deep third or playing lurk over the crossers can jump the drag or the zig, so quarterbacks need to see if that defender bites on run action or eyes the backfield before releasing. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the zig, but a robber defender sitting in the middle of the field can undercut both the drag and the zig if he reads the quarterback's eyes.
Use this on early downs or third and short when defenses are likely to sit in zone shells since the crossing routes and zig exploit soft zone drops. Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties or a single high look, if it is single high the zig has a clean lane against the vacated deep half. Hot route the RB into a wider flat route against man coverage since the natural check down flat area gets clogged when a linebacker follows him man to man. Sequence this play with Y Fork or Fork Y Drag from the same set so the defense sees similar route stems out of trips and has to guess between the zig and the underneath combo. Attack blitz-heavy teams with this since the quick drag and pin route give the quarterback an immediate answer if the fourth or fifth rusher gets home fast.
