Y Cross Flood aligns out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with a three receiver trips side and a single receiver isolated on the backside. The backside X runs a vertical clear route to stretch the deep coverage, while the trips side floods underneath with a deep out, a shallow crosser from the Y that works all the way across the field, and a quick out from the inside slot to create a horizontal stretch at three levels. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 3 by flooding one side and putting a defender in conflict between the deep out and the crossing route, with the primary read starting on the Y crosser as it clears the box and progressing to the deep out if the underneath defender sinks with the crosser.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety alignment before the snap to determine if the deep out or the crosser will have a bigger throwing window. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the crosser, since a slow reaction opens a big throwing lane for the quarterback. This play is most effective against Cover 3 and other zone drops that create horizontal conflict on the trips side. Man coverage with a physical corner on the deep out or a linebacker with underneath help on the crosser can shut this concept down quickly. Look for a user controlled safety sitting in the middle of the field, known as a lurk defender, since he can jump the crosser route and turn it into a turnover.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and medium when you expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells based on the safety alignment pre-snap.

If the corner over the flood side widens with the deep out immediately, come off it and hit the Y crosser in stride for a chunk gain over the middle.

Motion or check the backside X route based on leverage, since it functions as a clear out and rarely gets the ball but occupies the deep defender.

Pair this play with Levels Y Out or Fl Dig from the same set to keep defenses guessing between crossing routes and out breaking concepts on the same trips look.

Against aggressive user linebackers who jump the crosser, hit the underneath out route from the slot receiver for an easy checkdown and positive yardage.
