Mtn Same Side Zone is the run-heavy option out of the Y Trips Wk set in Shotgun, built to attack the side of the field where the trips receivers align. The offensive line executes a same side zone blocking scheme, sliding the whole front toward the trips call to seal the edge and create a clean lane for the HB to press and cut off the double team combo blocks. This is a run play at its core, with the primary read being the playside double team at the point of attack, then bouncing outside if the backside cutback lane is not there.
Watch linebacker depth and alignment pre-snap, stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that can blow up the same side zone scheme. Identify one high versus two high safety shells, since a single high safety often means an extra run defender in the box which forces you to find the cutback lane. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker flow, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens for a big gain. Look for a user controlled defender flying downhill to make an early tackle attempt, patience through the mesh point lets the blocking scheme develop and beats overpursuit. This run struggles against gap sound defenses with a stout nose tackle holding the point and disciplined linebackers reading their run fits, in those situations lean on the pass options in this set instead.
Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against a trips heavy set.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against your five blockers, consider audibling to a pass out of this same look.
Take advantage of the same side zone flow by using your HB user to press the playside hole hard before cutting back, since aggressive linebacker flow opens up the backside cutback lane.
Pair this run with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Base Alert Lookie out of the same Y Trips Wk set so the defense has to respect both the zone run action and the quick game read off the same personnel and formation.
Against defenses that load the box or show run blitz pre-snap, kill to PA Y-Out or PA Bears Y-out from this set to punish overaggressive linebackers with play action.
