Four Verticals Fix is the trips variant of the classic 4 Verts concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk, sending all four eligible receivers vertical to stretch the field and attack the seams against both zone and man coverage. The trips side creates natural spacing conflicts for underneath defenders while the backside receiver runs a clean vertical stem to hold the safety, forcing a two-high shell to declare. This is a pure dropback passer with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression starts with the seam route from the trips side, works to the backside vertical if the safety cheats over, and checks down to the running back on the release if both verticals are capped.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and width, since a narrow two-high shell signals vulnerability to the seam routes splitting the underneath zone defenders. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker or Mike, since a shallow drop or blitz key opens up the inside seam for an easy explosive gain. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled safety flashing down into a lurk position over the seam, since that defender can jump the route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. Against Cover 3, look for the deep third defenders to widen with the trips verticals, opening a throwing lane on the backside vertical route that the single deep defender cannot cover in time. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with quarters principles, since the safeties can sink onto the seams without conflict, so be ready to check down if you see those rotations.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safeties, since this play is built to punish two-high shells that get stretched by the trips seams.
If the corner over your backside vertical is playing tight man with no safety help, hot route that receiver into a slant or dig to create an instant man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks.
Use motion out of trips to bait the defense into revealing man versus zone before the snap, then confirm your read based on how the second level defenders react to the shift.
This play pairs well with Curls X Go or Levels Y Out in the same set, since both threaten similar vertical stems but bait the defense into sitting on shorter routes, making the safeties bite before you come back to Four Verticals Fix.
Best called on early downs or obvious passing situations where you have time in the pocket, since all four routes take time to develop and a clean pocket is critical against pressure looks.
