PA Texans Y-out is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that sells the run fake before the QB works the trips side. The Y (tight end) runs an out route as the primary breakpoint against man or off zone, with the trips bunch creating natural picks and clearing space underneath while a backside route serves as the outlet if the out is jumped. This is a man beater at its core, using the play-action freeze to slow linebackers and the Y-out to attack the boundary against off corners or nickel defenders who bite on the run fake.
Read the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap, since a strong bite on the run fake opens a clean throwing lane to the Y-out. Watch the slot cornerback or nickel defender leverage on the trips side, because outside leverage invites the out route to break open underneath. Identify Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells pre-snap, as these zone looks can be beaten if the flat defender bites on the play-action instead of sinking to his zone. Against man coverage, look for a safety rotating late to help over the top on the Y, which signals a possible Cover 1 robber or Cover 1 lurk trying to jump the out route. Beware of disguised blitzes where the defense shows two-high then rotates a safety down into the box, since this can leave the quarterback without enough time to hit the Y-out on time.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the strong safety and slot corner over the trips side before the snap, since a two-high shell tells you the out route has room to work against off coverage.
Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers on early downs, especially on second and short or first and ten when defenses expect run out of 11 personnel.
Hot route the Y-out into a quick option route if you see a hard blitz look, giving your tight end a sit-down conversion against zone blitzes.
Pair this play with HB Base or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up PA Texans Y-out once linebackers start creeping up.
Combine with Curls X Go or Fl Dig in the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow out breaks and deeper in-cuts off similar formation looks.
