RPO Base Alert Lookie is an RPO out of the Shotgun Y Trips Wk set that pairs an inside zone run look with a quick pass alert to the backside. The backside X runs a deep dig or crosser that breaks hard toward the middle of the field once he clears the numbers, giving the QB a big chunk play read if the alley defender bites on run flow. To the trips side, the two receivers work a short mesh with an in cut, giving the QB a quick throw window underneath if the defense sits deep. The primary read progression starts with the box count and second level flow to decide run or throw, then works to the backside dig as the first pass alert before checking down to the trips mesh routes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash the run lane immediately the backside dig will be wide open behind them. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high leaves the deep middle exposed to the dig route. Key the alley defender or slot corner on the trips side, if he sinks into a zone drop the underneath mesh routes have a tight window. Look for a nickel blitz off the edge, if the defense brings pressure the QB should get the ball out on the run key or the quick trips throw immediately. Man coverage without safety help over the top gets exposed by the dig route crossing the field, so respect any late rotation to a two high shell.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and give the run if the defense is playing base personnel with only six in the box.

If the strong safety or nickel corner crashes down hard on run flow, pull the ball and hit the backside dig for an explosive gain.

Use this play on second and short or third and manageable to keep defenses honest against your run heavy Y Trips Wk calls.

Pair this with HB Base or Same Side Zone earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and opens up the backside window.
