Inside Zone out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk lines up the RB offset to the QB with a three receiver trips look to the weak side and a single TE to the strong side. The offensive line zone blocks in unison, sliding to the play side to seal running lanes while the RB reads the double team and blockers to pick his gap. This is a pure zone run play with no play-action or RPO tag attached, and the primary read progression is the frontside double team first, then the backside cutback lane if the play side gets clogged.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth: stacked linebackers within four yards of the line signal run blitz or gap fill intentions. Watch for a Mike linebacker cheating toward the play side gap, which tells you to plan a cutback before the snap even happens. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down hard, since that opens the backside cutback lane. This run struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle occupying double team gaps and disciplined edge defenders staying home. Watch for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, since an eighth defender in the run fit forces you to check to a pass concept or bail out of the play.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Use the trips side receivers as run support decoys by motioning one across pre-snap to see if the defense shows man or zone rotation.
If the defense stacks the box, hot route the trips side into a quick screen or bail into a play-action shot play from the same personnel to keep the defense honest.
This play hits best on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are not sitting in run-stopping fronts.
Pair Inside Zone with HB Counter and Outside Zone from this same set so linebackers cannot key run direction off formation alone.
