Unders Y Viper is a trips-based underneath route combo out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk designed to attack zone coverage with horizontal stretch and layered depth. The Y (TE) runs a viper route that works into the middle void while the trips side floods the underneath zones with in-breaking and shallow crossing routes, creating natural picks against man coverage and soft spots against zone. The primary read starts with the Y viper crossing into the vacated middle linebacker zone, then progresses to the shallow trips routes if the middle is clogged, with the backside single receiver serving as a hot outlet against blitz looks.
Watch for a single high safety shell (Cover 3 or Cover 1), which leaves the middle of the field vulnerable to the Y viper route settling in the seam. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow or blitzes, the viper crossing route will have an open window behind him. Identify man coverage by checking if the linebacker or safety follows the Y in motion or shifts with the trips alignment, this signals a matchup you can exploit with a quicker option route. Be alert for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone or spying the middle, since disciplined zone drops from a Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell can take away the viper read and force a checkdown. Recognize overload blitzes from the trips side, which can disrupt the timing of the underneath crossers and require a hot route adjustment or quick backside throw to survive.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since this concept thrives against zone coverage that leaves the middle linebacker area soft.
Look for the Y viper route to settle in the intermediate middle zone against Cover 3 or Cover 4, this is your first read and often the highest percentage throw.
If the defense shows man coverage with a linebacker on the Y, hot route the viper into a quick option or speed up the route depth to create separation before the underneath crossers get picked off.
Use this play on second or third and medium situations where the underneath sit routes and viper crossing action can consistently move the chains.
Pair this play with Curls X Go or Levels Y Out from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and underneath sit concepts, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
Against aggressive blitz packages, get rid of the ball quickly to the trips side shallow routes since the protection is built for a quick underneath progression, not a deep drop.
