Breakdown

Cheat Crossers is a Shotgun Y Trips Wk crosser concept built to attack man coverage with natural traffic and rub potential. Off the diagram, the two deep crossers from the trips side work opposite directions at the second level (one settling into a deep dig-like break, the other continuing across the field), the outside receiver runs a shallow drag underneath toward the sideline, and a receiver on the near side pushes vertical up the seam as a clear-out or alert throw. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working away from the trips bunch, then works down to the shallow drag as the checkdown if the crosser is taken away by a wall or banjo technique.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety shell first, since two deep safeties usually means the crossers will run into a defender sitting in a hook or curl zone. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they are shallow and undisciplined they will collision the crossers and disrupt the timing of both the deep crosser and the drag. Key the cornerback technique on the trips side, press man corners struggling to navigate the crossing traffic is a sign this play will hit big against man coverage. User the deepest crosser with a rover or lurk defender if you are on defense, since that route is the primary read and shutting it down forces a checkdown to the drag. Cover 3 with disciplined zone drops and a robber underneath is the best answer against this play, as it clogs both crossing routes and takes away the seam clear-out read.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the crossers only truly separate against man coverage or banjo confusion.

If the defense shows off coverage or soft zone shells, prioritize the deep crosser first since it will sit down in the void behind underneath defenders.

Against aggressive man teams that like to jam at the line, hot route the shallow drag to a quick option or slant so you have a rhythm throw versus press man.

This play works best on second and medium to third and medium since the crossers need time to develop and the shallow drag gives you a safe checkdown.

Pair Cheat Crossers with Y Stick or Stick N Nod from the same set to keep the defense honest on quick game, then come back to Cheat Crossers once linebackers start sitting on shorter routes.
