Fl Dig is a trips based dig concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that attacks the middle of the field with a flanker breaking hard on a dig route across the field while the trips side works underneath to hold linebackers and clear space. This is a man beater and a solid zone beater against single high shells since the dig sits down in the void between the hook defenders and the deep third or half. The primary read progression starts with the dig route coming across the field, then works to the underneath crosser or flat option if the middle is clogged, and finally checks down to the backfield outlet if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify the deep safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotating to Cover 2 or Cover 4 the window for the dig shrinks and you may need to check to the underneath crosser instead. Watch the middle linebacker or Sam linebacker depth at the snap, if they sit shallow in a hook zone they can undercut the dig route so timing the throw before they settle is critical. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the middle are the biggest threat to this concept, bait them with your eyes toward the flat before coming back to the dig. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotation is where this play thrives since the dig settles between the three deep defenders and the underneath zone droppers. Man blitz packages with no deep help are vulnerable to the dig if your receiver can create separation, but a well timed nano blitz can force the quarterback to throw early before the route develops.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre snap since the dig sits perfectly in the soft spot behind linebackers and in front of the deep defender.

Use motion or a quick glance at the slot defenders to identify man coverage, if you see a defender shade outside on the trips receivers the dig should win versus man leverage.

Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag or spot route if you expect a blitz look, this gives you a quick outlet against pressure without abandoning the dig read.

Pair this play with Curls X Go or Fl Short Dig in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between a full field dig and a shorter version that punishes aggressive linebacker drops.

This play works best on second or third and medium situations where the sticks fall in the seven to twelve yard range, matching the dig route depth perfectly.
