Packer Slants is a trips-side quick passing concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that floods the field with three slant routes breaking underneath while the backside X runs a deep slant against single coverage. All three trips receivers cut inside at a shallow depth, creating a natural pick zone against man defenders and stacking horizontal windows against zone. The QB progression starts with the innermost slant from the trips side working outward, then works to the single-side receiver if the defense sells out on the trips concept.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too far into zone drops the underneath slant window opens immediately for an easy completion. Man coverage with no safety help over the trips side gets shredded by the natural rub created from the stacked slant releases. Cover 3 with a hard-sitting curl-flat defender can jump the shallow slant, so key that defender before committing to the first read. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge get exposed because the slants clear out quickly, giving the QB a fast release valve against pressure. If the defense shows two deep safeties with tight underneath linebacker spacing, the trips slants get congested, so be ready to check to the backside slant as the primary answer.
Fire this play off quickly on early downs to punish nickel and dime packages that show soft outside leverage on the trips side.
Presnap, check for man coverage by looking at CB alignment on the innermost slot receiver, tight man alignment invites the natural rub created by the stacked slants.
Hot route the backside X into a hitch or quick out if you see a corner sitting hard on the slant against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3.
Pair this with Packer Unders or RPO Peek Slant in the same set to keep defenders guessing between horizontal stretch concepts and RPO reads without changing your formation tendency.
Best used on 2nd or 3rd and short to medium, the quick-hitting slants get the ball out before pressure arrives and convert manageable distances.
