The three receiver side runs a Stick concept, with the outside receiver sitting down on a stick route, the slot receiver working a corner breaking route to the flat, and the inner slot bending an out route underneath, while the backside single receiver runs a slant. The HB releases out of the backfield on an angle route, giving the QB a built-in check against blitzes and man coverage on the underneath level. The primary progression starts with the HB angle route against man pressure or linebackers, then works to the stick route in the flat, and finally to the corner route as the deep zone clear-out.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage on the HB pre-snap, since a linebacker or slower defender matched on the running back is an automatic angle route win. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, which struggle to account for both the stick and corner routes on the trips side. Key the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sinks too deep the stick route sits wide open underneath him. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with a hard flat defender jumping the stick route, since that forces a quicker check down to the angle route. Look for blitzing linebackers crashing downhill, since the HB angle route is designed specifically to counter that pressure with a built-in outlet.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short or medium yardage when you expect man coverage or a blitz look, since the HB angle route is a built-in answer against blitzing linebackers.

Read the flat defender first, if he widens with the corner route the stick sits in a soft spot for an easy completion.

Against zone shells, work the stick to corner combo high to low since the corner route stretches the flat defender and opens a window underneath.

Pair this play with HB Mid Draw or Inside Zone from the same formation to keep defenders honest against the RPO style backfield action.

If you see a nano blitz or heavy pressure look pre-snap, hot route the backside slant into a fade or hitch to attack a blitzing corner one on one.
