Divide Y Hitch lines up out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with a three man trips side and a single receiver to the boundary. The backside X runs a deep vertical up the sideline while the trips side stacks a deep out breaking route from the outside receiver, a corner/post breaker from the Y at the second slot, and the innermost slot receiver sitting down on a quick hitch underneath. The HB releases to the flat as a check down or man beater against overplayed underneath coverage. This is a zone beater at its core, using the hitch to sit in soft spots against zone drops while the two deep breaking routes on the trips side clear out linebackers and stress the middle of the field, so the primary progression is hitch first, then work up to the deep out breaker on the trips side if the underneath defender bites.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two deep safeties or a single high safety, since single high alignments open up the deep out breaker on the trips side against Cover 3. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and inside he can jump the hitch route, so be ready to work the check down to the HB in the flat instead. Key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks hard to the deep middle to help against the corner or post breaker, the hitch route will be wide open underneath. Against man coverage, look for a user controlled defender lurking near the trips bunch since he can rob the hitch or jump the underneath crosser, so have your hot route adjustment ready. Cover 2 shells with aggressive corners jumping short routes can shut down the hitch quickly, so be prepared to progress to the deep out breaker or the vertical route on the backside X for an explosive play.

Usage Tips

Use this against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where linebackers sink into intermediate zones because the underneath hitch sits right in the soft spot behind the curl to flat defenders.

Check the flat defender pre-snap and if he is aligned tight to the trips bunch, throw the hitch immediately on a quick timing route for a safe five to seven yard gain.

If you see man coverage with a linebacker matched on the hitch route, hot route the hitch into a slant or speed out to create instant separation off the break.

Pair this play with Curls X Go or Fl Dig from the same set on early downs to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and deeper attacking concepts out of the same trips look.

Best called on second or third and short to medium distance where the underneath hitch and HB flat option give a high floor completion, but keep an eye on the deep out breaker against Cover 2 for an explosive shot play.
