Breakdown

Packer Slot Seam is a trips-based play-action style pass concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with 11 personnel. The backside X receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers as the clear-out and primary read against man coverage, while the trips side stacks a deep crosser dragging all the way across the field underneath, a shallow drag from the inside slot, and the outside receiver working a quick out breaking away from the formation. The running back stays in to check release or leak out to the flat, giving the quarterback a clean seam versus man beater and a natural progression from the vertical seam to the crossing routes underneath if the deep shot is not there.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the X receiver since a single high safety cheating late is the biggest threat to the seam route. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field trying to jump the deep crosser, since that route travels through the heart of the defense and is vulnerable to a lurking linebacker or safety. Cover 3 with a fast-flowing middle linebacker can undercut the shallow drag if the defender reads the quarterback's eyes quickly, so disguise your first look. Man coverage with press corners struggling to stay on top of the seam route is a green light to trust that throw, but bail on it if you see a robber safety rotating down into the passing lane. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can affect the quarterback's ability to set his feet for the seam throw, so account for pass protection issues and lean on the quick out or checkdown as a hot route answer.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since the seam route on the boundary is the money throw against Cover 1 or Cover 3 with a linebacker or safety unable to match speed vertically.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top on the X, take the seam shot immediately off the snap before the pocket collapses.

Against zone coverage, work the deep crosser and shallow drag combo on the trips side since those routes will find soft spots between zone defenders sitting in the middle of the field.

Use this on early downs or second and medium to keep the defense honest, then sequence into Packer Unders or Packer Slants from the same formation to keep the picture identical while attacking different levels.

Hot route the running back to a flat release versus blitz-heavy looks to give the quarterback a checkdown valve if the seam and crossers are covered.
