Breakdown

Packer Slot Seam lines up out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with a trips bunch to one side and an isolated X to the boundary. The backside X runs a seam up the numbers as the vertical stretch, the outside trips receiver runs a corner route to occupy the deep quarter, the middle trips receiver works an over route across the field, and the inside slot receiver runs a quick shallow drag underneath. This is a man beater built around the seam and drag combo, designed to attack Cover 1 and Cover 3 with the seam as the primary read and the shallow drag as the checkdown against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the seam window, this is the primary defender that can take away your first read. Identify if the defense rolls to a two high shell post snap, this bumps the seam read down the progression and makes the over route your first target. Check corner alignment on the backside X, a corner playing outside leverage in press man gives the seam runner a clean release inside for a big play. If the defense brings a blitz off the edge, the shallow drag becomes your immediate answer since the protection may not hold up long enough for deeper routes to develop. Usage Tips

Key the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheat toward the trips side the backside seam route will have a favorable one on one matchup down the field.

Use the over route as your second read against zone shells since it settles into open grass behind linebackers and in front of deep defenders.

Hot route the shallow drag into a quick out if the defense shows man coverage with an outside corner squatting on the flat.

This play works best on second and medium to second and long when you need a explosive gain but still have the shallow drag as a safety valve against the blitz.

Pair this with Packer Unders or Packer Slants in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the vertical seam shot and the quick game underneath from the same formation look.
