Dagger Y Whip lines up out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with three receivers to the trips side and a single receiver backside running an isolated dig. From the trips bunch, the outside receiver clears vertically on a deep post/seam to occupy the safety while the middle slot runs the signature dagger dig sitting at roughly 12-15 yards, and the inner trips receiver runs a whip route underneath, breaking outside then working back to the flat area to beat underneath coverage. The backside X on the true left runs a corner breaking route off a vertical stem, giving the quarterback a two-way go away from the trips concept. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by clearing out the deep defender with the vertical route and settling the dig into the vacated middle zone, with the primary read progression going deep clear-out first to hold the safety, then the dagger dig as the true first read, then working down to the whip if the middle is taken away.
Pre-snap, check for two safeties split deep, this tips Cover 2 and tells you the dig behind the linebackers is the priority read. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and stays central he can jump the dagger dig route, forcing the quarterback to move to the whip underneath. If the defense shows single high safety in the middle of the field, that is Cover 3 or Cover 1, the vertical clear-out on the outside should occupy that safety and open the dig behind the corner's zone drop. Man coverage is exposed by the whip route's change of direction, if you see press man or a linebacker mirroring the trips receiver, the whip's outside-in break should create separation against a defender playing outside leverage. Nano blitzes or blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt this play since the quarterback needs time for the dig to develop, watch for a user-controlled defender crashing the pocket pre-snap and be ready to check down to the whip immediately.
Identify the safety shell before the snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards this is a prime Cover 2 beater because the dig will sit right behind the underneath linebackers and in front of the safeties.
Against Cover 3, key the deep middle safety, the vertical clear-out route should pull him off his landmark and open a throwing window for the dagger dig behind the flat defender.
Use the whip route as your checkdown against man coverage or if the middle linebacker sits in the dig window, it gives you a built-in escape valve without needing a hot route.
Pair this call with Y Fork or Curls X Go from the same Y Trips Wk set to keep the defense guessing between vertical clear-outs and shorter combo routes, this disguises your intentions pre-snap since the formation and personnel look identical.
Best used on second and medium to third and long situations where you need to hit a chunk play over the middle, avoid calling it into heavy pressure looks since the dig takes time to develop and the quarterback needs a clean pocket.
