Breakdown

Comebacks out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk sends the two outside trips receivers vertical before snapping their routes back downhill at roughly 12-15 yards, giving the quarterback a classic comeback read to the boundary and to the trips side sideline. The single receiver on the backside runs a deep dig that cuts hard across the middle of the field, while the running back releases into the flat as a checkdown and screen valve behind the line. This is primarily a zone beater, designed to sit down in the cushion of off coverage corners and attack the space underneath deep zone drops, with the deep dig serving as a secondary answer against split safety shells.

Defensive Reads

Check corner alignment pre-snap, off coverage corners are the primary key that tells you the comeback route will have room to sit down in the window. Watch for press man corners since they can carry the comeback vertically and force a risky back shoulder throw or an incompletion. Read the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops from underneath zone defenders can clog the throwing lane to the sideline comebacks. Identify user controlled safeties rotating late, a lurking safety over the deep dig can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down. Beware of overload blitzes to the trips side, the running back flat route is your answer but only if the quarterback recognizes it before the comeback routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Look for off man or zone coverage pre-snap since corners playing press man can drive on the comeback route and undercut the throw before it settles.

Use the RB flat route as your check option versus a hard blitz when the outside comebacks have not had time to develop.

Pair this call with Curls X Go or Seam Comebacks from the same set so the defense has to respect both the sit-down comeback and the vertical shot off similar route stems.

Best run on second or third and medium to long when you need a controllable chunk gain without exposing the quarterback to a deep drop.

If the safeties rotate to a two high shell post snap, prioritize the backside dig since the middle of the field should open up against split safety zone coverage.
