Breakdown

Y Fork is a trips based route concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that isolates the backside receiver on a fork style route while the trips side occupies the underneath and deep zones to stress zone coverage. The tight end works a seam or bender through the middle of the field, creating a natural high low read against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, while the backside single receiver runs a go or fade to hold the deep defender. Primary progression starts with the Y (tight end) working the middle read, then bends to the backside isolation route if the safety jumps the seam.

Defensive Reads

Identify the single high safety pre-snap, if he sits in the deep middle he can rob the tight end seam so be ready to reset to the backside isolation route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sprints to the seam depth immediately, hit the backside go route since the defense is selling out on the tight end. Look for a user controlled defender spying the tight end release, this signals the human opponent expects the seam read and you should work the trips side flood instead. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut down the backside shot but leave underneath zones soft, check down to the shallow trips routes instead of forcing the deep throw. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge often leave the tight end in a favorable matchup versus a blitzing linebacker, get the ball out quickly before the rush arrives.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for a single high safety look before the snap because Y Fork thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 1 where the middle of the field is vacated by the seam route.

If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the backside receiver into a quicker breaking route like a slant to beat off man coverage since the deep shot becomes less available.

Use this play on early downs or third and medium when you want a explosive shot play but still have a safe underneath checkdown to the flat or drag from the trips side.

Pair Y Fork with Fork Y Drag and Quick Fork Zig in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the tight end release, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Against man coverage, user the tight end through his route stem and look to rip through the seam vertically since defenders often trail from behind with no help over the top in Cover 1.
