Breakdown

Levels Switch is a trips-side pass concept run from Shotgun Y Trips Wk with 11 personnel. The three receivers to the trips side run a switch release into a levels combo, the inside slot breaks in on a deep dig while the outside receiver settles underneath on a shallow crosser, creating a natural high low read against zone. The backside X runs a deep dig across the field on the red route while the HB releases out of the backfield on a check release flare, giving you a five man route concept built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone drops with horizontal stretch.

Defensive Reads

Identify two deep safeties pre-snap as your first indicator this is a Cover 2 look, which is exactly what this concept is built to attack. Post-snap, watch the flat defender to the trips side, if he widens with the shallow crosser it opens a throwing lane for the deep dig behind him. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting in the deep middle or lurking the dig route, since a rangy user defender can jump the backside dig and turn it into a pick six. Against man coverage, especially Cover 1 or Cover 0 with a single high safety, the switch release can create natural picks but a physical corner who fights through the switch can disrupt timing, so be ready to check to the HB flare. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the HB flare becomes a quick answer but a well timed defensive line stunt can collapse the pocket before the levels routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route check to confirm if the defense is playing zone or man before the snap, since this concept is designed as a Cover 2 beater and loses value against man coverage without adjustments.

Key on the flat defender and the deep half safety to the trips side, if the flat defender sinks with the underneath crosser, throw the levels dig behind him for the explosive gain.

Use the HB flare as your checkdown against a heavy blitz look, especially on third and medium when you need to just get positive yardage and reset the down.

Pair this play with Levels Y Corner or Levels Y Out in the same set to keep the defense guessing on levels concepts, since the route stems look similar pre-snap but attack different zones.

Call this on second and long or third and medium when you expect a Cover 2 shell, since the switch release helps the receivers avoid the initial jam and clear the underneath zone defenders quickly.
