Quick Unders is a trips based quick game concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with 11 personnel. The backside X runs an in breaking route working underneath as a hot outlet while the trips side stacks a deep dig, a corner breaking route, and a flat route to attack multiple levels of the defense, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing route to the open side. This is a quick pass zone beater designed to get the ball out fast against soft coverage shells, with the primary read progression starting at the backside in route, then working to the flat and swing combo if the underneath zones are clogged.
Watch the underneath linebackers at the snap, if they sink hard on the dig route the flat and swing combo on the trips side will be wide open. Key the flat defender on the trips side, if he widens too fast to the flat route the corner breaking route behind him becomes the easy answer. Look for a cornerback sitting in the shallow route landmark, that signals man coverage and means the backside in route needs a hard break to separate. If the defense shows a hard blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill, get to the HB swing route immediately since it beats blitz timing. Cover 3 shells with a deep sitting flat defender can take away the shorter routes, so be ready to climb the progression to the deeper corner route on the trips side.
Check pre-snap for two high shells since the underneath throws to the in route and flat combo work fastest against off man and zone drops that soften at the snap.
Use the HB swing as your built in checkdown against blitz heavy fronts, it gets the ball out before pressure arrives and keeps the play safe on early downs.
Hot route the backside X into a quicker breaking route against man press corners if you see a corner sitting hard on that side pre-snap.
This play is best on second and short or third and short since the routes settle in quickly and do not stretch the field vertically.
Pair this with Levels Y Out or Fl Dig from the same set so you can show the same backfield action and formation while attacking different zone depths on consecutive plays.
