Quick Unders is a trips-based quick game concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that gets the ball out fast against pressure or tight coverage. From the trips side, the outer receiver runs an inside dig that settles under the coverage, the middle slot receiver breaks off a deep comeback up the sideline, and the inline trips receiver runs a quick out to the flat. The backside X runs a wheel route up the boundary off the flat area. This is a quick pass concept built to beat both man and zone thanks to the layered depths, with the primary read starting on the shallow crossing dig underneath before working out to the flat and wheel as outlet options.

Defensive Reads

Check for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties playing off. This tells you the comeback route will have room to sit down against soft zone coverage. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender pre-snap. If they are pressed up in man coverage, the underneath dig becomes the priority since it crosses the defender's face immediately. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop. If he sinks with the dig route, look immediately to the flat or comeback for the open window. Beware of Cover 2 Man or man blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the backside wheel can get picked off if the flat defender sits and reads the quarterback's eyes. If the defense shows a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, avoid the dig and go directly to the comeback or wheel to stay ahead of the user-controlled defender.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short or medium yardage when you need a quick, high percentage completion against pressure looks.

Read the middle linebacker and slot defender before the snap. If they show blitz or press man, target the underneath dig since it settles into the vacated zone.

Against zone shells with deep safeties, work the comeback route since it sits down in the soft spot before the corner can recover.

Pair this with Curls or Levels Y Out from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick unders and deeper breaking routes off identical formation looks.

If the defense sells out on the shallow crosser, hot route the flat runner into a quick seam or use the backside wheel as a big play answer against overaggressive underneath defenders.
