QB Wrap is a designed QB run out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with 11 personnel, pulling the quarterback through a wrap concept behind the offensive line while three receivers are stacked to one side to pull defenders out of the box. The line shows down blocks with the offensive line sliding to create a rushing lane, and the QB reads the initial mesh point before wrapping to either side of center based on where the alley opens. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes, with the primary read being the frontside gap before the QB adjusts to backside if flowed defenders overcommit.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with six or fewer in the box, since this is when the wrap lane opens up cleanest. Key the defensive ends and outside linebackers for contain responsibility, if they crash hard down the line the QB has room to wrap outside. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting at the mesh point instead of flowing with the line, this defender is the primary key that shuts down the design. Man coverage on the trips side pulls defenders away from the box and creates natural running lanes for the QB. Zone shells with linebackers reading run-pass keys quickly can string this out, so look for delayed but disciplined linebacker fills as a sign the wrap will get contained short of the sticks.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and only call this when you count six or fewer defenders in the box, since QB Wrap dies against stacked fronts.
Use the trips side alignment to bait the defense into rotating coverage away from the run, then attack the vacated side with the wrap action.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Buck Alert Smoke earlier in a series so the defense respects the pass options and stays honest on the QB run action.
On third and short or goalline situations, call QB Wrap after establishing HB Mid Draw or Inside Zone to keep linebackers flowing hard and create a bigger wrap lane.
Avoid calling this against defenses that show heavy QB spy tendencies or edge crash blitzes, since the design has no answer for a disciplined spy sitting on the mesh point.
