The diagram shows the QB taking the snap and cutting upfield behind the guard/tackle combo, with the HB serving as a lead blocker attacking the alley while the Y Trips receivers stay uninvolved as decoys to hold the defense spread wide. This is a pure gap scheme run play designed to attack light boxes when defenses respect the trips look and get an extra gap advantage with the QB as a runner rather than a passer.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box versus the number of blockers, this play thrives when the defense plays two high safety shells and light boxes. Watch linebacker depth and alignment, if linebackers are stacked tight to the line pre-snap they can beat the pulling blockers to the edge and blow this up. Post-snap, key the edge defender or DE, if he stays home and does not get sealed by the HB lead block the wrap loses its running lane. User the play side outside linebacker or slot corner as the defense, this is the defender most likely to have to fight through blocks and make the tackle. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages or nano blitzes that get immediate penetration before the pulling blockers can get on their path, so avoid calling it into obvious blitz downs.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when the defense shows a light box, especially against nickel or dime personnel that respects the trips formation and removes a run defender.

Check the numbers pre-snap: if the defense is outnumbered in the box because of the trips alignment, this is a green light run.

Use the HB as your primary blocker read, follow his path into the alley since he will seal the first threat off the edge.

Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Buck Alert Smoke out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the QB run and the quick game, forcing linebackers to hesitate.

Mix in HB Base or Inside Zone from the same formation to keep run fits honest before hitting QB Wrap when defenders start cheating toward the trips side.
