Breakdown

Read Option out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk is a true zone read run play with the QB and HB mesh point diagrammed by the red and yellow crossing arrows behind the line. The offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme, sealing the interior gaps while the QB reads the backside edge defender to decide whether to hand off on the zone track or pull and attack the alley himself. This is a run-first designed play (no play-action or pass concept shown) that punishes defenses selling out to stop the give by attacking horizontally with the QB keep.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a crashing DE or edge defender who ignores the QB entirely and flies to the mesh point, since that is the exact key that should trigger a keep read every time. User controlled defenders sitting on the mesh point can blow up both the give and the keep, so look for manual spying linebackers creeping toward the box pre-snap. A safety rotating down into the box pre-snap signals an 8 man front designed to stop the interior run, which favors the QB pulling and bouncing outside. Even fronts with two off-ball linebackers reading the mesh flat footed are vulnerable to the zone hand off hitting the natural cutback lane. If the defense shows blitz with extra defenders crashing both edges, the QB has no keep lane, so check to a quick pass concept instead of forcing the read.

Usage Tips

Use this out of 11 personnel on early downs when the defense shows a light box, since the trips look pulls a linebacker or safety out wide and thins the run fit.

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and identify if the defense is in a 1-high or 2-high shell, because 1-high often means an extra run defender crashing downhill on the mesh.

Manually key the backside end or outside linebacker before the snap. If he crashes hard on the RB every time, pull the ball and get to the edge with the QB.

Pair this with HB Mid Zone or Same Side Zone from the same Y Trips Wk set to keep defenders guessing between inside zone hand offs and the QB keep look.

Best called on 1st and 2nd down in standard box counts. Avoid it against heavy nickel or dime packages that stack extra DBs in the run fit.
