5 6 Trap out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk is a power run play designed to attack the interior with a trap block scheme. The play pulls a blocker across the formation to trap the first defender inside the tackle box, creating a lane for the HB to press the hole and read the block in real time. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the traditional passing sense, and the primary read is the trap block itself: the HB must press downhill and cut off the pulling blocker's kick out to hit the crease before second level defenders fill.
Look for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since this alignment gives the trap blocker a clean angle on the first threat inside the tackle. Watch for a defensive tackle or edge defender crashing hard down the line pre-snap, as that aggressive gap shoot is exactly what the trap block is designed to neutralize. If the defense shows an overloaded interior with extra defensive linemen or a nano blitz package up the middle, expect the trap to get beat since there are too many bodies for one lead blocker to handle. Post-snap, key on the play side linebacker's fill speed: slow reacting linebackers get trapped or sealed, while fast flowing linebackers who diagnose the pull can blow up the play at the mesh point. Against user controlled defenders spying the middle or sitting in a lurk technique, this play loses its blocking advantage since a smart user can jump the trap block and shoot the gap untouched.
Run this out of a run heavy personnel look early in a series to establish tendency before dialing up play-action shots like PA Y-Out or PA Read from the same Y Trips Wk set.
Check the box count pre-snap: 5 6 Trap works best against six or fewer men in the box since the trap block only accounts for one extra defender.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with a linebacker crashing downhill, this play can actually work in your favor since the trap block is designed to cut off aggressive interior penetration.
Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early, then snap and let the HB read the trap block develop before committing to a lane.
Pair this with HB Counter or Inside Zone on early downs to keep the defensive front guessing between gap schemes and zone concepts, then hit RPO Buck Alert Smoke or RPO Peek Slant off similar formations to punish overaggressive box defenders.
