Breakdown

Panther Y-Drag is a trips based drag concept built to attack man and zone coverage with horizontal stretch. Out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk, the two receivers at the top of the diagram run a crossing seam and corner combo that occupies the deep safety and outside cornerback, while the Y (TE) runs the drag route underneath from the trips side all the way across the field, and the boundary X receiver runs a quick out to hold the flat defender. The primary read starts with the deep crossing routes to see if the coverage bites, then works down to the Y-Drag as the true rhythm throw against linebackers and nickel defenders sitting underneath.

Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 pre-snap, since the drag route will find the soft spot between the flat defender and the middle linebacker in both shells. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying the middle of the field, as he can lurk the Y-Drag route and jump the throw if you are locked on too early. Check cornerback depth on the trips side, if they are playing tight man coverage the crossing routes at the top of the concept will win quickly against inside leverage. Man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest weakness, the crosser and corner combo will create natural rubs that spring the drag route open in the shallow to intermediate zone. Cover 2 with an aggressive underneath robber can shut this down, so be ready to check into a hot route on the backside out if you see the robber sitting in the drag lane before the snap.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium or third and short where linebackers are likely to sit shallow and bite on the drag if you never look their way first.

Take a pre-snap look at the safety alignment, if you see two high safeties cheating over the trips side, the drag has a clean lane once the crossers clear the middle linebacker.

Hot route the backside X receiver into a deeper comeback or dig if you are facing single high man coverage, since the out route alone will not beat aggressive man corners.

Pair this play with Fork Y Drag or Y Cross Flood in the same set so the defense has to respect multiple drag and crossing concepts from the same trips look, keeping linebackers honest.

Against zone heavy defenses, manipulate the underneath zone defender with your eyes on the crossing routes first, then snap your throw to the Y as he sits down in the drag window between the hashes.
