Fork Y Drag is a man beater out of the Shotgun Y Trips Wk set, built around a drag route from the Y that works across the field underneath while trips-side receivers occupy the deep defenders. The trips bunch creates natural traffic for zone defenders and picks for man coverage, while the backside receiver runs a route to hold the single high safety honest. The primary read progression starts with the Y drag as the rhythm throw, then works to the trips side comebacks or corner routes if the drag gets clogged or if you diagnose a soft zone shell pre-snap.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and flat footed he is likely spying the drag, so be ready to check to a comeback or corner route on the trips side. Identify single high safety looks pre-snap, since Fork Y Drag is designed to attack the vacated middle of the field when the safety has to respect the trips concept deep. If you see a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, that is a sign the drag is being sat on, so double clutch or move to your check down instead of forcing the throw. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with slow linebacker drops get shredded by the timing of the drag route, but disciplined Cover 2 Man or Cover 6 with a robber underneath can take away the crosser and force you to your outlet. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through the A gap put pressure on the quarterback before the drag has time to develop, so be ready with a quick check to a hot route or a screen play from the same set if you diagnose the blitz pre-snap.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm if the Y drag lane is open before the snap, since a nickel or dime package will have more room underneath than a base 4-3. Against man coverage, hot route the drag to sit down or speed it up depending on the defender trailing to create separation on the cross. Against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3, key the flow of the linebackers, if they widen with the trips receivers, the drag will settle right behind them for an easy pitch and catch. This play works best on second or third and short to medium since the drag is a high percentage, low risk throw that keeps you on schedule. Pair Fork Y Drag with Y Fork or Panther Y-Drag in the same set to give the defense the same initial look while attacking different depths and angles, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drop reads.
