Breakdown

Cheat Comebacks In lines up out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk with a trips side to the top of the formation. The two outside trips receivers push vertical before snapping back on comeback routes, sitting down against soft coverage along the boundary and sideline, while the innermost trips receiver runs a deep in that cuts across the middle of the field. Backside, the single receiver runs a deep comeback of his own, giving you a comeback beater on both sides of the field plus a crossing in route to attack zone drops underneath. This is a man and zone beater built on high low comeback timing, with the primary read starting on the deep in route against zone drops before working outside to the comeback breaks on either side.

Defensive Reads

Read the corners at the snap, if they bail immediately into a deep zone drop the comebacks will sit down right in front of them for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender on the deep in route, since a zone defense with a robber or lurk defender sitting in that intermediate window can jump the throw. Against man coverage, look for a safety rotating over the top on the trips side, that indicates two high safety help and the comebacks will be tightly covered on the break. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells are especially vulnerable since the deep zone defenders often bail too far, leaving the comeback throws wide open underneath. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since that lurk can bait you into throwing the deep in route into coverage.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and medium when defenses are sitting in soft zone shells expecting a checkdown.

Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off man or zone, since the comeback routes only open up against off coverage or zone drops that bail deep.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the deep in receiver to a shallow drag or speed up his break to beat the leverage before the defender can undercut it.

Pair this with Cheat Crossers or Cheat Slot Cross in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the comeback timing and the crossing route concepts out of the same trips look.

Snap the ball with rhythm and throw the comeback with anticipation, since the break happens fast and late throws get picked off by squatting corners.
