Breakdown

Cheat HB Draw is a delayed run concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that shows pass first to freeze the second and third level defenders before the HB hits the mesh point. The diagram shows the outside WR to the trips side running a vertical clear route while the inline receiver runs a flat route, dragging coverage away from the interior running lane, while the offensive line sets up in pass protection to sell drop back pass before turning up to wall off the front. The primary read is the HB pressing the hole and reading the defensive line flow, cutting away from the initial pursuit created by the play action fake since the blockers up front are inviting penetration before sealing running lanes off tackle.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he sits still or reads run keys immediately instead of dropping into coverage the offense should abandon the draw and check to a pass concept instead. Watch for defensive ends and tackles staying disciplined in their rush lanes rather than crashing hard upfield, disciplined lines take away the cutback lanes this play depends on. Man coverage with off ball linebackers spying the backfield is the toughest shell to attack since spy techniques erase the delay advantage the draw is designed to create. Zone coverages with linebackers dropping to intermediate depth are prime for this play since the vacated underneath area right behind the line becomes the cutback lane. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the box pre snap since a user spy on the quarterback or running back can jump the draw the instant the ball is snapped and blow it up for a loss.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and medium when the defense is showing an aggressive pass rush look or has been keying the pass out of Y Trips Wk.

Watch for defenses that widen their linebackers on obvious passing downs since the delayed handoff exploits linebackers flowing hard to cover the trips side routes.

Motion the trips receiver pre snap to check if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender follows across the formation you know it is man coverage and the draw becomes even more effective against blitz heavy man looks.

Pair this with Empty Post Cross and Four Verticals from the same set to keep defenses honest since those plays punish linebackers who sit on the draw or crash down too quickly.

Avoid calling this against defenses that are showing run blitz or a heavy box count since the delayed action gives extra defenders time to read and fill the gap.
