PA Bears Y-out is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that uses run-fake mechanics to freeze linebackers before working the Y (TE) on an out route breaking toward the boundary. The trips side occupies the defense with vertical stems and a shorter route to hold safeties and corners, while the backside often has a route working opposite to punish overplayed coverage rotations. This is primarily a zone beater because the play-action hold on second-level defenders opens the out route window against zone drops, though it can also work against man coverage if you get a favorable matchup on the TE. The primary read progression starts with the Y-out on the play-action boom, then works to the trips side if the underneath zone defenders sink and take away the out.
Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the run fake, that flow confirms the play-action hold is working and the Y-out window will be open in the flat to intermediate zone If the defense shows a single high safety with man coverage principles, expect the corner or slot defender to trail the trips routes tightly, making the TE out route your safety valve Beware of a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone near the TE breakpoint, that lurk threat is the primary counter to this out route concept Diagnose zone blitz packages by checking for a defensive lineman dropping into coverage, this often signals sim pressure that can disrupt the play-action timing before the out route develops If the defense stays disciplined with linebackers dropping immediately into passing lanes without biting on the run fake, this is a strong indicator they anticipated the play-action call and are sitting on the intermediate routes
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to sell the run fake convincingly against defenses keyed on stopping the ground game
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties the play-action hold on linebackers is your best friend against zone coverage
Use the hot route flexibility to convert the Y-out into a quick option route if you diagnose man coverage with the TE matched against a slower linebacker
Pair this play with HB Base or Inside Zone earlier in the drive so the defense respects the run action and bites harder on the fake
Sequence this after a few snaps of RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek to condition linebackers to sit on quick game, then hit them with the play-action shot for the out breaking window
