PA Bears Y-out is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Trips that sells the run fake before working a boundary out route from the Y (tight end) against the void left by the linebackers biting on the play fake. With trips to one side, the concept stresses zone defenders that step up on the run action while also giving a man beater on the backside if the defense rolls single coverage. The primary read starts with the Y-out on the break for a quick access throw, then progresses to the trips side crossers or comeback routes if the flat is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they step up hard on the play fake, the Y-out window opens instantly and this play wins against most base zone shells. Identify the flat or curl-flat defender before the snap. In zone coverage this defender has to sink and cover the boundary, so a fast break by the Y can beat sluggish zone drops. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play gets punished if the defender jumps the route early, so look for aggressive corners or nickel defenders who like to sit on outs. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the fake will shut this down, since the flat defender stays home and the Y has nowhere to work. Watch for a lurking safety or user-controlled defender sitting on the boundary route, since a smart defender playing zone match can bait the quarterback into a turnover on this exact concept.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) so the run fake actually holds linebackers and forces them to bite before recovering to the flat.

Check the flat defender pre snap. If a corner or safety is sitting low in the boundary, expect them to jump the Y-out, so be ready to move to your second read in the trips concept.

Use play action rollout timing to your advantage. Do not rush the throw to the Y, let the fake develop for a full beat so the linebackers clear before you snap it out.

Pair this with HB Mid Zone or Same Side Zone earlier in a series so the defense keys run action and freezes their linebackers when you finally pull this one out.

Motion or shift the trips side pre snap to identify man versus zone. If defenders follow the shift, you know it is man and the Y-out becomes a high percentage completion against a covered flat defender who has to run with a route breaking away from him.
