Mtn PA Smash Scissors is a play action shot play out of the trips side that fakes the run to hold linebackers and safeties before working a scissors concept up top. The two trips receivers cross vertically, with the inside slot breaking to the corner and the outside receiver crossing underneath him into the opposite corner, creating natural traffic against man coverage. Underneath, the backside X runs a quick out while the flat defender to the trips side gets an angled corner route from the number three receiver, and the RB releases on a shallow drag from the backfield for a check down. This is primarily a man beater built around the scissors crossing routes, with the deep out on the backside serving as a zone beater option against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are deep and outside the numbers this indicates Cover 2 or Cover 4 which opens up the backside out route. Watch the flat and corner defenders to the trips side post snap, if they widen too early to jump the underlying routes the scissors crossers will separate deep. Key the middle linebacker's reaction to the run fake, aggressive linebacker bite on play action creates natural throwing lanes for the RB drag and opens the middle of the field. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play thrives, the crossing scissors routes create rub situations that are difficult for man defenders to fight through. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the passing lane over the middle, this lurk threat can bait a QB into a turnover if he throws to the crossing routes without clearing the middle read first.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are still respecting the run fake, since the play action hold is critical to opening the scissors routes downfield.

Identify two high safety shells before the snap, if you see Cover 2 or Cover 4, target the deep out route to the single receiver side since both scissors routes are designed to clear out safety help.

Against man coverage, trust the scissors combo to create natural picks, hold the ball just enough to let the routes cross before throwing the receiver who comes open off the rub.

Hot route the RB into a check release if you see a heavy blitz look, since the play action fake can be vulnerable to fast interior pressure up the middle.

Pair this with Mtn Smash Choice or Mtn RPO Base Alert Smash earlier in a drive to establish the smash concept, then hit defenses with the scissors variation once they start jumping the flat routes.
