HB Mid Zone is an inside zone running concept out of the Shotgun Y Trips Wk set with 11 personnel, designed to attack the interior gaps with a full zone blocking scheme up front. The offensive line steps and combo blocks in unison, sealing the front and flowing to the backside linebacker while the HB reads his blocking surface from frontside to backside cutback lane. This is a pure run play with no play-action element, so the primary read progression for the HB is to press the mid gap, locate the first hard defender in the box, and decide between the frontside crease or the backside cutback based on how the second level linebackers flow and fill.

Defensive Reads

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has stacked eight or nine defenders near the line this play gets stuffed regardless of blocking. Identify Mike linebacker depth, if he is sitting shallow at four yards he can fill the cutback lane fast so lean frontside instead. Watch for defensive line slants and gap exchanges post-snap, since zone blocking can struggle against aggressive one gap penetration from odd fronts. Look for safety rotation into the box on run blitzes, a strong safety cheating down pre-snap signals a run blitz that can blow up the mid zone before the back gets going. User controlled defensive tackles shooting gaps will collapse the interior lanes, so be ready to bounce outside if you feel immediate pressure up the middle.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Y Trips Wk when the defense shows a light box with only six or fewer defenders, since zone runs need favorable numbers to hit consistently.

Use manual control on the HB to make one cut and get vertical rather than dancing behind the line, patience kills zone runs in competitive play.

Pair HB Mid Zone with PA Y-Out or PA Bears Y-out from the same set so linebackers respect the run fake and widen their run fits, opening up the play-action passing game.

Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay balanced and keep the defense honest against your trips passing concepts.

Watch for user linebackers spying the mid gap, if they crash down hard immediately, bounce to Same Side Zone or Outside Zone on the next snap to punish overcommitment.
