PA Y-Out is a play action pass out of Shotgun Y Trips Wk that sells the run fake to the backfield before the QB works a boot style pocket. Off the fake, the Y (inline TE) runs an out route to the flat while the trips side gives you a deep clearout with the outside receiver bending across the field on a deep crosser and the two inside receivers running a corner route vertical and an out breaking underneath route toward the sideline. The single receiver backside runs a deep comeback going the opposite direction to hold the boundary defender. Primary read progression starts with the Y out in the flat as the quick answer against man pressure, then works to the underneath out route on the trips side, and finally climbs to the deep corner or backside comeback if the play action freezes the second level long enough to let those routes develop.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, that shell tells you the underneath routes including the Y out and shallow out will be open in the soft spots of a zone drop. If linebackers are stacked tight to the box or showing blitz indicators, expect them to bite on the play fake, which opens up the Y route and the deep comeback on the backside immediately. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the corner route is where this play hurts defenses most, since the deep corner route will separate on a good rep versus a trailing linebacker or slow cornerback. User controlled defenders who sit in a lurk spot underneath the trips side can jump the out routes, so if you see a user flashing toward that area be ready to climb the ladder to the corner route instead. Defenses can shut this down with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the play fake and sink into zone drops, since that clogs the shallow out and Y route reads and forces you into a tighter window on the corner throw.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when you have already established the run game so linebackers bite on the play action fake and open passing lanes underneath.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the Y out and flat route combo will be your fastest access point against zone drops.

Against man coverage, key the Y route immediately off the play fake since it wins quick against linebackers who are late diagnosing pass.

Pair this play with HB Base or Same Side Zone earlier in a series to sell the run look, then dial up PA Y-Out to capitalize on defenders selling hard downhill.

If you see press man on the trips side receivers, hot route the shallow out to a slant or speed out to counter jam technique and protect against the corner getting a free release rep.
