Breakdown
Under Y-Option lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel and shows a five man route concept with no protection help beyond the offensive line. The Y (TE) runs the option route out of the slot, breaking outside off the option read after selling vertical, while the outside receiver on that side runs an under route flattening across the field. On the boundary, the X runs a corner style route from the outside receiver spot, and the two receivers on the opposite side both push vertical up the seam and sideline to stretch the defense deep. The primary read starts with the Y-option since it reacts directly to the underneath coverage, then progresses to the under route as the check down before working to the vertical shots on the backside if the defense shows single high or a blown coverage.
Defensive Reads
Read the slot defender's alignment before the snap, tight inside leverage tells you the Y-option will break outside for an easy pitch and catch. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, that defender can undercut both the option route and the under route if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Against man coverage, look for the Y-option to consistently win against off coverage corners who cannot mirror the option break in time, this play is a strong man beater. Against zone drops, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a hard flat defender, the under route can get squeezed, so check if the flat defender is sinking or staying flat footed. If the defense shows two deep safeties with aggressive underneath linebackers blitzing, the option route timing gets disrupted, be ready to check down immediately or expect pressure to affect the throw.
Usage Tips
Use this concept on third and short to third and medium since the Y-option gives you a built in sit or break read against man and zone alike.
Pre-snap, identify if the slot corner or nickel is playing outside leverage or inside leverage on the Y, that leverage tells you which way the option route will break.
Against zone shells with soft underneath defenders, hot route the under route receiver to sit down early for a quick access throw before the shallow defenders can rally.
Pair this play with Curls or Digs H Option in the same set so the defense sees similar Shotgun Spread Y-Slot alignment but has to respect both option breaks and traditional curl windows.
If the defense starts jumping the option route after film study, sequence into Go's Y-Under or Four Verticals from the same formation to punish overaggressive underneath defenders with a vertical shot.
