Breakdown

Under Y-Option lines up with two receivers stacked to the left (X and Y), one slot receiver running a vertical route, and an outside receiver running a go route up the sideline. The Y runs an option route out of the stack that breaks outside on the option key while the X releases underneath and across the field on a deep crossing route to the opposite sideline. This is a man beater built on the option route creating natural separation against man leverage, with the vertical routes on the right side clearing out coverage and forcing a horizontal stretch. The primary read starts with the Y option route based on the defender's leverage, then progresses to the crossing X route if the option is covered, and finally to the vertical shots if the defense sits on the short stuff.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the defender over the Y receiver pre-snap since tight inside shade signals an outside option break while outside shade signals an inside break. Man coverage with no safety help over the slot is the ideal shell for this play since the option route wins immediately on the break. Zone coverage with a linebacker sitting in the shallow hook can jump the option route, so be ready to move to the crossing X route on your next read. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field since he can undercut both the option route and the deep cross if he reads your eyes. Cover 3 with a deep half rotation to the trips side takes away the vertical shots and forces you to live underneath with the option and cross routes.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defender over the Y is playing inside or outside leverage because that dictates which way the option route breaks and how quickly you can throw it.

Use this play on second and short to medium distance when defenses are more likely to play man coverage since the option route thrives against man beaters.

If the defense shows a soft zone shell with linebackers sitting underneath, look to the crossing route from the X since it works as a zone beater by sitting behind linebacker drops.

Combine this play with Go's Y-Under or Mtn Y Cross from the same set to keep defenses guessing between option breaks and full speed crossing patterns.

Hot route the outside vertical receivers into shorter comeback or curl routes if you see two high safeties sitting deep to prevent them from baiting an interception on a low percentage deep shot.
