Breakdown
Go's Y-Under out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot sends both outside receivers on go routes to stretch the corners vertically while the slot receiver runs a short out breaking to the sideline. The Y (tight end) works an under route across the middle from the opposite side, crossing the field underneath the go routes to sit in the void left by the linebackers, and the backside receiver runs a shallow drag underneath everything to act as a check down. This is primarily a zone beater that attacks Cover 3 and Cover 2 by clearing out the deep thirds with the two verticals and settling the Y-under into the vacated middle zone, with the Y-under as your primary read and the slot out as the quick secondary option against soft corners.
Defensive Reads
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap because if he sinks with the Y-under immediately, the defense is likely in a matchup zone or has a spy assigned to that crossing route. Watch the corners at the snap: if they turn and run with the go routes without safety help rotating over, that signals man coverage and you should look to the Y-under sooner in your progression. Key the strong safety pre-snap alignment since a deep middle safety indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which are vulnerable to the vertical clear-out setting up the Y-under in the seam. Cover 2 with aggressive underneath linebackers can jump the Y-under route, so if you see linebackers crashing downhill immediately, check to the slot out or backside drag as your outlet. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket before the Y-under fully develops, so recognize A-gap or edge pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on the quick slot out route.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high because this play thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells where the underneath zones get stretched by the vertical routes.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the go routes to stay aggressive but understand your matchup shifts to the Y-under working through traffic rather than beating zone leverage.
Use the slot out as your quick answer versus blitz looks since it develops fast and gives the quarterback an outlet before pressure arrives off the edge.
Pair this play with Four Verticals and Y Cross in the same set so defenses cannot sit on the crossing route tendency, then come back to Go's Y-Under once they start jumping the shallow stuff.
This play shines on second and medium to second and long where the defense is more likely to play zone drops instead of committing to man pressure.
